Ganesh was established in 1981 at 9A Market Place, Blandford Forum. The name 'Ganesh' refers to the elephant God in the Hindu religion. Ganesh is a lucky God, and the God of shopkeepers.
Ganesh was originally started by the Late John Roberts and Catriona Roberts who worked/travelled widely in the Middle East, and enjoyed buying handicrafts. On returning to England, a shop specialising in such items seemed an obvious career move. Catriona continued with the shop until 1992 when John took it over with his then wife, Eveline Roberts.
John and Eveline operated Ganesh until 2000 when they decided to retire to India and educate their son Christopher there. In 2005, Christopher returned to start his tertiary education and John and Eveline quickly followed. After a few years, Eveline felt the need to reopen Ganesh. Ganesh was fortunate to find a venue at 9 East Street. The shop was small and on the edge of town. However, In 2013 Ganesh decided to return to a larger premises and relocated to 55 East Street. This move coincided with Ganesh's 25th Anniversary of trading in Blandford Forum. It has maintained its uniqueness but now Ganesh's new location enables it to display its full product range.
John sadly passed away in 2016 and now Ganesh is run by Eveline and her son Christopher. The business has grown and now offers even more products from around the world.
